Online Arguments

Image
I chose this argument because it is very close to me. I spend several hours a day at the Gill Coliseum and it's good to look at it from the perspective of a visitor/viewer and not a player. Also, I find this argument is constructed partially correctly, but there are a few things that could be changed and added. Link:  https://x.com/Fitzpaddy3/status/1759280968895270937?s=20 Negative examples: I'm missing some evidence and examples in the argument - what is insufficient about Gill, what other arenas have that Gill doesn't etc... I would provide more reasoning, connect things together and use more logos - why are Gill's conditions insufficient for basketball etc... I would include a counter argument and rebut it - there may be several in this case, but I would say the main one is money. Rules: Avoid using excessive amounts of emotion Be polite, courteous, considerate and respect others Provide credible evidence to support our argument and logic Be specific and stay on top...

Toulmin Method

Image
There are many things to be found on the internet, but how to determine if the information is true and how to convey constructive messages. There is the Toulmin method, the key to arguing and creating persuasive messages. "This method will allow you to analyze the logic of any argument" (Green 283).  Argumentation A complex argument consists of many elements. First, we find a proposition that we want to present. This is what we want the audience to believe. Data, is the evidence for why listeners should believe the claim. It can be statistics, graphs, tables, researches, etc... It forms the foundation for the rest of our argument. Warrant then subsequently links the evidence to the claim. It justifies and explains why the parts are related so the audience can see the connections. Backing provides support for the warrant. It supports its reliability (COMM 211). "A qualifier limits or clarifies the claim" (Green 285). This means that it specifies under what circumstan...

The Battle For Public Opinion

Image
The internet or online landscape is a space that is huge for the average user, it is endless, it is ungraspable, and so it can actually hold everything. To top it all, the creator does not see, feel and often cannot even imagine the audience. This environment has made visible everything we never dreamed of before, so we have it as if at our fingertips. Information can go around the world in a second, so it can have the power of a tsunami on public opinion, but it can also become a drop in the ocean in a glut of information. It can create a series of waves or one wave can be covered by another storm. But what is true in nature is also true in this online landscape. Action provokes reaction. Posting Public opinion is nothing more than a mirror image of what is written in a sufficiently large number of media outlets. It is the frequency with which an issue is reported that determines the frequency of coverage, not the accuracy of the information (Krupka 2019). This is actually facilitated...

Digital Natives, Digital Immigrants

Image
The world is evolving and so is technology. The generation of students of the moment were born into this world with technology. They don't even know anything else. Prensky called them digital natives, aka "native speakers of the digital language of computers, video games and the Internet" (1). And then there's the rest, Prensky referred to them as digital immigrants, those who were not born into the world of technology but had to adapt (2). These two groups differ in the learning style that benefits them. Immigrants as teachers do not understand their students, digital natives. Immigrants think that students have not changed and learning methods should be retained but "Today's learners are different" (Prensky 3). Digital natives like to multitask, can learn through videos, prefer graphics over text, and like to process information quickly. Immigrants support learning the old fashion way. Lots of textbook text, minimal digital devices, and they believe le...

Knapp's Relational Model

Image
Through communication, you create interpersonal relationships. However, they grow, develop and disappear. Online communication plays a role in what the relationship looks like and what happens to the relationship.  I have an example of a fading relationship. Unfortunately, it involves me and my sister. I have a younger sister who I used to spend all my time with. As it happens, we've known each other since she was born and it's the most important relationship I have. But as we grow up and each build our own lives, our paths begin to separate. The biggest reason is that I'm studying abroad and I only see her 2 months out of the year. It's not related to us fighting or not being able to stand each other, but more so that we don't spend as much time together as we used to, we don't get to connect with each other as much due to full schedules and time difference. Online communication is the only option in this case to keep the relationship alive. Without it, it coul...
