Digital Natives, Digital Immigrants

Image
The world is evolving and so is technology. The generation of students of the moment were born into this world with technology. They don't even know anything else. Prensky called them digital natives, aka "native speakers of the digital language of computers, video games and the Internet" (1). And then there's the rest, Prensky referred to them as digital immigrants, those who were not born into the world of technology but had to adapt (2). These two groups differ in the learning style that benefits them. Immigrants as teachers do not understand their students, digital natives. Immigrants think that students have not changed and learning methods should be retained but "Today's learners are different" (Prensky 3). Digital natives like to multitask, can learn through videos, prefer graphics over text, and like to process information quickly. Immigrants support learning the old fashion way. Lots of textbook text, minimal digital devices, and they believe le...

Knapp's Relational Model

Image
Through communication, you create interpersonal relationships. However, they grow, develop and disappear. Online communication plays a role in what the relationship looks like and what happens to the relationship.  I have an example of a fading relationship. Unfortunately, it involves me and my sister. I have a younger sister who I used to spend all my time with. As it happens, we've known each other since she was born and it's the most important relationship I have. But as we grow up and each build our own lives, our paths begin to separate. The biggest reason is that I'm studying abroad and I only see her 2 months out of the year. It's not related to us fighting or not being able to stand each other, but more so that we don't spend as much time together as we used to, we don't get to connect with each other as much due to full schedules and time difference. Online communication is the only option in this case to keep the relationship alive. Without it, it coul...

Oversharing Online

Image
Social networks and modern technologies are all around us. They affect our lives whether we want them to or not. The younger generations, including mine, cannot imagine life without such tools, and I am not surprised. We grew up in such a world and know nothing else, but I often wonder if it has had an effect on me. Is there an ideal number of “friends” or connections individuals have on Facebook that can improve their mental health? I don't use Facebook much, I'm present on other platforms, but of course I have some experience. Facebook friendship for me is fake. To me, it's just like following rather than establishing a real relationship. In my own experience, I often get friend requests from people I've never seen or talked to. Therefore, the number of friends on Facebook and other platforms doesn't affect me personally. I consider friends to be those I know very well and have a relationship with, and I only use social networks for fun or to connect with existing...

About me

Image
My name is Dominika Paurova, but everybody calls me Dom. I am from the Czech Republic from a small city called Mladá Boleslav. I am studying kinesiology at Oregon State University. Also I am part of the women's basketball team here at Oregon State. In the future I would like to play basketball at a professional level and after my sports career I would like to work with athletes as a physiotherapist or conditioning coach. I started playing basketball 9 years ago and it was the reason why I decided to study in the United States. I spend almost all my free time with it, but I still find time between practice and homework to travel, read fantasy books, watch movies or just hang out with my friends and teammates. In the winter I love skiing especially in the Austrian Alps and in the summer I like to windsurf on the Italian lake Lago di Garda. I play for the Czech women's national basketball team. It might sound boring, but my whole life revolves around basketball. I have a younger s...
